Austen & White was born from a simple idea: that the objects we create should possess more than beauty. They should carry thought, character, provenance and a sense of connection to the world from which they came.
Our name pays homage to two extraordinary figures whose lives and work are deeply rooted in the landscape surrounding us - Jane Austen and Gilbert White.
Both were observers. Both were innovators. Both possessed an uncommon ability to look beyond the obvious and find meaning, beauty and possibility in the world around them. It is this spirit of observation, curiosity and creativity that lies at the heart of Austen & White.
Jane Austen is celebrated as one of Britain’s greatest writers, renowned for her intelligence, wit and extraordinary understanding of human nature.
Her genius lay not simply in the stories she told, but in the precision with which she observed the world. She noticed subtleties others overlooked - character, behaviour, relationships, social conventions and the small details that give life its richness.
That acute observation became artistry.
For Austen & White, Jane Austen represents intelligence, perception, creativity and the transformation of observation into something enduring.
Her work reminds us that craftsmanship is not merely about making something beautiful. It is about seeing differently. It is about understanding detail, recognising character and bringing together seemingly small elements to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
This philosophy is reflected in our own approach to design. We look closely at materials, particularly reclaimed timber, and see possibilities where others might see imperfections. A knot, a weathered edge, an old mark or a change in grain is not something to conceal. It is part of the story.
Like Austen, we believe that character is found in the detail.
The second half of our name belongs to Gilbert White, the pioneering naturalist, clergyman and writer whose observations of the natural world helped shape the way generations came to understand and appreciate their surroundings.
Living at Selborne in Hampshire, White devoted himself to observing the landscape around him. Rather than simply looking at nature, he studied it closely - recording its rhythms, behaviours, seasons and subtle changes.
His observations became The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne, a remarkable work that combined scientific curiosity with an intimate appreciation of the living world.
White did more than document nature. He sought to deepen our understanding of it and, in doing so, encourage others to look more closely themselves.
That principle resonates profoundly with Austen & White.
Our reclaimed wood creations begin with the same act of attention: looking again.
Timber that has already lived one life is given another. We study its grain, its scars, its weathering, its age and its character. We work with what the material gives us rather than attempting to erase its history.
The natural irregularities within reclaimed wood become part of the design. The material is not simply a component of the finished piece; it is part of its identity.
In this sense, our work is a quiet continuation of White’s philosophy - a celebration of the natural world and an invitation to appreciate its detail.
At Austen & White, we believe that good craftsmanship begins long before the first cut, engraving or finishing touch. It begins with observation. We consider the material in front of us. We look at its proportions, its grain, its texture, its imperfections and its potential. We consider how it might be transformed while retaining the qualities that make it distinctive.
Our reclaimed wood pieces are therefore not about imposing perfection upon a material. They are about recognising the beauty that already exists within it. A weathered timber beam may carry decades of history. A piece of reclaimed wood may bear marks, knots, old fixing points and variations in colour that cannot be replicated artificially. These details are not defects. They are evidence.
They tell us something about where the material has been and give us the opportunity to determine where it goes next. This is where the philosophy of Austen and White comes together: observation becomes inspiration, inspiration becomes creativity, and creativity becomes something tangible.
There is something inherently British about this way of seeing.
It is found in the country house, the garden, the woodland, the workshop and the changing seasons. It is found in old timber, worn stone, weathered surfaces and objects that have acquired character through time.
It is also found in the written word — in the careful observation of human behaviour and the natural world.
Austen & White takes inspiration from this heritage without seeking to recreate the past.
We are interested in what happens when traditional appreciation meets contemporary craftsmanship.
When reclaimed materials meet modern design.
When the history of an object is respected rather than hidden.
And when craftsmanship is guided by curiosity, precision and imagination.
Austen and White is therefore more than a name. It is a statement of intent.
The discerning eye - intelligence, perception, artistry, with an appreciation for the intricate details that make something truly compelling.
Curiosity. Discovery and a profound connection with the natural world - the desire to observe, understand and encourage others to appreciate what surrounds them.
Together, they express the philosophy behind our work.
To look closely.
To question convention.
To recognise beauty in unexpected places.
To respect the character of natural materials.
And to create objects with individuality, substance and enduring appeal.
Our work begins with materials that have already lived a life. Through the hands of our craftsmen, those materials are given another chapter.
The result is not mass-produced perfection. It is something more considered. Something with character.
Something that carries the marks of its past while belonging unmistakably to the present.
The world has changed considerably since Austen and White walked the lanes of Hampshire, but the value of close observation has not.
If anything, it has become more important.
In a world increasingly dominated by uniformity and mass production, we choose to look for individuality. In materials that others may overlook, we see potential. In imperfections, we find character. In the natural world, we find an enduring source of inspiration.
This is the legacy we draw from our namesakes.
Not a literal continuation of their work, but a shared way of seeing.
A belief that there is always more to discover when we look a little closer.
And that when observation is combined with imagination, intelligence and skilled craftsmanship, the ordinary can become extraordinary.
This is Austen & White.
Rooted in Hampshire. Inspired by nature. Guided by observation. Crafted with imagination.
And always looking a little closer.
